Crossovers account for a large part of Peugeot’s annual sales (and sales of many automakers), but the Paris-based company has not left the station wagon segment behind. It launched the long roof version of the third-generation 308, which is a Volkswagen Golf-sized hatchback mainly sold in Europe. It equips the model with technology and style and provides an opportunity for it.
Like the hatchback, the 308 SW (you guessed it, stands for “wagon”) proudly adopts Peugeot’s new design language. It is defined by sharper lines, a larger grille with a 3D-like plug-in, and a generally more upscale look, but remember that the variant shown in the news photo is definitely not the basic model. The designers aimed their goal at the middle of the Venn diagram of form and function, and made the roof line slightly inclined by placing the roof line at the almost upright hatch. Peugeot pointed out that the SW provides 21.4 cubic feet of cargo space, which can carry 5 passengers, and the SUV with the rear bench folded flat can provide 57.7 cubic feet of cargo space. However, don’t look for seats in the third row.
The 308 is quite spacious, but 182 inches long it is also relatively large (at least according to European standards). Internally, it conforms to Peugeot’s design method called i-Cockpit. It received a new version of the small, almost kart-style steering wheel that the company installed on most of its cars in 2021, and a screen of up to 20 inches facing the driver, including a digital instrument cluster on the dashboard. Crossovers are occupying the European market, and Stellatis is adjusting its product portfolio accordingly. It only sells about six trucks: 308 SW, 508 SW, Fiat Tipo, Opel’s Astra Sports Tourer and Insignia Sports Tourer (plus their Vauxhall brand twins), and maybe a Citroen C5 X, depending on What market segment you want to enter.
